Why this port
JNPA (formerly JNPT, and still branded Nhava Sheva on most shipping manifests) sits across the Thane Creek from Mumbai and handles roughly half of India's containerised trade. For hospitality-textile export programmes, it is the default loading port on our FOB invoices unless the buyer's routing asks otherwise.
JNPA is the container port most global hospitality buyers already know. Its sailing schedule is the deepest in India — every Alliance (2M, THE, Ocean) and most standalone majors (Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, ONE, HMM, Evergreen, Yang Ming, OOCL, PIL, ZIM) run direct or feeder services. That density matters: when a buyer's forwarder needs to cut a last-minute booking on a specific carrier, JNPA almost always has a slot.
The port handles five container terminals — NSICT, NSIGT, GTI, APMT, and the flagship BMCT — operated by a mix of DP World, PSA, APM Terminals and Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal. Direct Port Delivery (DPD) and Direct Port Entry (DPE) clearance is mature: AEO-certified exporters can clear containers without the ICD step, shaving 48 – 72 hours off terminal-to-gate time.
For our programmes, JNPA is the natural port for Solapur terry, Maharashtra-origin spa textiles, and anything that consolidates cargo from the Mumbai-Pune belt. Bed linen out of Panipat typically runs through Mundra instead — the rail lane from NCR to Mundra is faster than the Mumbai haul — but JNPA remains the fallback if Mundra's container yards are congested or sailing dates don't align.
