Why this port

Pipavav sits on the Saurashtra peninsula, 90 nautical miles south-west of Mundra. Operated by APM Terminals (the Maersk Group's port arm), it handles a smaller container volume than Mundra but runs a clean, all-weather container operation on the same Arabian-Sea lane profile. For us, it is the overflow lane — the one we book when Mundra schedules are tight or the buyer's forwarder is specifically carrier-aligned with Maersk or MSC direct strings.

Pipavav's commercial pitch is congestion avoidance. When Mundra's container yards are full and vessel waiting times stretch past 24 hours, Pipavav offers a predictable alternative on many of the same strings. APMT runs direct services to Europe, the US East Coast, the Middle East and East Africa — the Maersk AE-7, TA-2 and ME-2 strings all call.

The port has double-stack rail connectivity to Ahmedabad and the NCR via the Western DFC, similar to Mundra though with lower daily train frequencies. Drive time from Ahmedabad is roughly 6 – 7 hours; from Jaipur or Rewari, 18 – 24 hours by road or one overnight train.

For hospitality-textile programmes, Pipavav is the tactical port — booked when Mundra is congested, when the buyer's freight-forwarder has a specific Maersk string booking, or when the programme is mid-size enough that the narrower schedule isn't a constraint. Terminal efficiency is high; turnaround times at the gate are competitive with Mundra.
