Why this port
V.O. Chidambaranar Port (renamed in 2011 from Tuticorin Port Trust after freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaranar Pillai) is a central-government major port on the Gulf of Mannar, roughly 600 km south of Chennai. For south Tamil Nadu cargo — and for buyers whose destination routes cleanest through a Colombo-hub transhipment — VOC is the lane we book when Chennai slots are tight or the transit profile favours a southern sailing.
Container operations at VOC are anchored by the PSA SICAL Container Terminal (known as NCT). Throughput has grown steadily on the back of improved Colombo feeder services and direct calls from X-Press Feeders, SCI, Maersk and CMA CGM; the port is also an important general-cargo, POL and coal hub on the Indian east coast.
Geographically VOC sits below the Colombo latitude, which matters for routing economics. Feeder services to Colombo are frequent and short, and Colombo then connects to most EU, US East Coast and Pacific lanes. For buyers whose forwarders already use Colombo-hub strings, VOC often prints a cleaner transit than the Chennai-via-Colombo alternative because the feeder leg is shorter.
For hospitality-textile programmes, VOC is the tactical overflow for south Tamil Nadu cargo — especially when Chennai's DP World or PSA terminals are slot-constrained. Drive times from Erode (~8 – 10 hours) and Karur (~9 – 11 hours) are longer than to Chennai, so VOC is a secondary port, not a default one; but it is the right port when the routing or the schedule demands it.
