Why this port
Mundra, in the Gulf of Kutch, overtook JNPA in container throughput in 2020 and has stayed ahead since. For bed-linen and NCR-origin hospitality programmes, it is the shorter, more reliable lane than JNPA — the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) gives Panipat cargo a double-stack rail route to Mundra that beats the Mumbai haul by a clean 36 – 48 hours.
Adani's Mundra is a privately operated major port and India's single largest container handler. Two container terminals — MICT (APSEZ-operated) and the CMA Terminals-operated MIT — together run 13 berths, with 20-metre draft capacity supporting 24,000-TEU ultra-large container vessels. Nothing in India currently matches that size envelope.
The commercial advantage for hospitality-textile buyers is the NCR-to-Mundra DFC corridor. Double-stack container trains from Rewari, Dadri and Palanpur hit Mundra in roughly 36 hours — materially faster than the equivalent Mumbai-bound move. For buyers running Panipat bed-linen programmes (sheets, duvet covers, pillow cases) this is the decisive factor.
Mundra's sailing schedule is broad but slightly less dense than JNPA on US East and EU direct strings. Transhipment via Jebel Ali or Colombo fills the gaps. The port is also India's leading Middle East and Red Sea corridor hub — direct services to Jebel Ali, King Abdullah, Jeddah and Sohar are weekly or better.
